Nenim Iwebuke was born in Akumazi, Delta State, in the Southern part of Nigeria. He spent 6 years of his early life in Toxteth, Liverpool in the UK. His love for music started as a kid, listening to his dad’s record collections - funk, soul, disco and jazz; Nenim would sing and dance to them especially the James Brown records with the funky guitar riffs and heavy groovy basslines.
Nenim and his family returned to Lagos, Nigeria in 1988 where he lived and got exposed to a lot of highlife, afrobeat and afrofunk music which was all over Lagos then. He graduated from the University of Lagos in 2007 and moved to Nasarawa to serve his country under the National Youth Service Corps in 2008. While there, he picked up DJing, threw parties and played at a few local dance venues in Lafia, Nasarawa state. In 2009, he moved to Abuja where he met DJ TTB and started an apprenticeship under him, also DJing at a few venues in Abuja. Nenim moved back to Lagos by the end 2010 where he met and worked with DJ CAISE.
In 2011 Nenim’s career kicked off and he got residencies at some great venues in Ikoyi and Victoria Island, Lagos. His childhood love for funk, disco and later house music, which he would mix together got him other residencies and bigger events; By this time Nenim was shuttling between Lagos and London playing for various events.
In 2014, Nenim traveled to New York to study Audio Engineering/ Music production at SAE Institute, successfully completing the 9-month course at the end of 2014. By the end of his studies he was hanging with different musicians and went a step further to learn music theory and bass guitar playing. This gave him a deeper sense of love for live music, encouraging him to dig deeper into his roots, the music that was unconsciously part of him– Afrofunk, Afrobeat and Highlife. Nenim later started writing his own music, which is afrofunk/ afrobeat inspired dance music and started working with other musicians to record his music and have it released under his record label– 5th Circle Records Inc. So far, Nenim has deejayed at prestigious venues like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Apollo Theater. He also maintained residencies at Shrine World Music Venue and Bembe and is the progenitor of Afrobeats parties– Gbedu Afrobeats and Home and Abroad. Nenim hosts an Internet Radio Show– SEEDS OF AFRO, aired on Radio Free Brooklyn and continues to perform internationally and locally.
